Visual Clutter and Mental Clarity: Who Knew a Clean Counter Could Feel This Good?

Brett and I have been in our new home for just over a month, and I wish I could say we had it all together right away, but real life doesn’t come with Pinterest-perfect timelines. It took us a while to finally tackle the clutter that had claimed our kitchen counter. You know the kind: unopened mail, random tools, baby items that wander from room to room like they pay rent. But OMG, the difference it made once we cleared it off? Night and day.

I’ve always known visual clutter affects your mental state, science even backs it up. Studies from the Princeton Neuroscience Institute show that physical clutter in your environment competes for your attention, reducing performance and increasing stress. The more cluttered your space, the harder your brain has to work to process information, which can lead to overwhelm and mental fatigue.

And let me tell you, it’s alarming to actually feel just how true that is. That one clean surface lifted a weight off my shoulders I didn’t even realize I’d been carrying. I felt calmer, more in control, and weirdly… motivated. I suddenly had the energy to tackle other little cleaning jobs I’d been avoiding, not out of guilt, but because I genuinely wanted to.

Turns out, clutter doesn’t just impact stress. According to UCLA’s Center on Everyday Lives and Families, women who described their homes as cluttered had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. And clutter has even been linked to sleep problems, decreased focus, and lower life satisfaction.

I know I’m not alone in feeling like mess = mental chaos. Especially as a mom with a little one and a house full of stuff, it’s so easy to let the small piles slide. But clearing just that one space reminded me that it doesn’t take a total overhaul to make a real difference. Sometimes, all it takes is one clean surface to breathe easier.

Here’s to the next part of the house, because if a counter can make me feel this good, imagine what emptied some totes from moving will do!
