I want you to stop for a second and really think about this.
When you ask someone, “How are you doing?”
Is it just habit?
Is it just filler?
Or do you actually want to know?
Because here’s the thing:
What if the person you asked responded with the truth. Not the polite, filtered version, but the raw, messy, “this day sucks and I feel like I’m drowning” truth?
Would you still ask next time? Would you still want to hear it? Or would you get uncomfortable? Change the subject? Start avoiding that person altogether?
So why do we ask?
Is it to put on an image that we care, or because we genuinely do?
Because if we truly cared,
Wouldn’t we be okay hearing the heavy stuff, too?Not just the smiles and “I’m fine”s? Maybe it’s time we stop asking unless we’re ready to really listen.
And maybe it’s time we give people the space to answer honestly. Not everyone is doing okay. And maybe that’s okay, too.
